Your air conditioner has had a lot of work to do this summer and we still have more hot weather to go. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re done with your AC for the season. Keeping up with annual AC maintenance, while also following a few other tips, can help you maintain your air conditioner while remaining comfortable too.
Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit
Debris can accumulate around your outside unit, specifically during the fall. When it comes time to rake up the leaves in your yard, at least rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can inhibit air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down faster. We want your air conditioner to last as long as it was designed to.
Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat
Have your thermostat set at the highest temperature you can while still staying cozy. Whenever possible, take advantage of additional cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your
thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to get to that temperature. You may think shutting off your unit completely will save on energy and help your system, but that creates more work for it to make up when you flip it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is another thing that could lead to early system failure.
